This year I have been studying to achieve Honours for my Bachelor of Music: Music Technology. I have spent around the last 8 months researching, programming and writing music for large scale electroacoustic ensemble. I decided to base the project around the music of Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto, in particular their work utp_ in collaboration with Ensemble Modern. The aim of this project is to find ways to synthetically combine the elements of acoustic and electronic music in a way which enhances both and thoroughly explores dense, engaging textures.

‘lucidity’  is 46 minutes of music for large ensemble, electronics and video projections.

Performers:

Some of the keys to this work are its use of pre-recorded, real-time and manipulated sound synthesis and sampling; scoring for acoustic instruments and electronics using similar techniques and methods; spreading textures across the entirety of the frequency spectrum and combining elements of instituational electroacoustic music, modern electronica / microsound and modern experimental band formats (jazz and post-rock).

A long time between updates to say the least. Time for a big update and a dashing return to the internet.

The main project lately has been my Honours Recital – this has been in progress for around 8 months and is coming together really well. The work is 50 minutes of music for acoustic ensemble, interactive electronics, computer generated sound and visuals. This takes place at the WAAPA Music Auditorium, 2 Bradford Street Mt Lawley on the 13/10/2010 at 6:30pm and entry is free. I’ve had a really great time working on this project and I have fantastic musicians who are happily devoting their time to workshopping and experimenting with me.

I’m also happy to announce that I have been awarded the Tura Commissioning Prize for 2010 – Tura gratiously awards one final year student the opportunity to compose a new work which will be presented in 2011. Thank you Tura! My project plan is to analyse brainwave data to be translated into sounds and image that represent the chaos and inconsistency of the unconscious mind.

And also for people who have been asking me about this recently, I will definitely be living in Europe for a significant portion of next year. It’s just got to happen now. More info soon. And to close, something I found on a lost thumb drive, a video I created for Cat Hope’s Watched project for 10 wall-mounted ipods. A veritable feast of dodgy video effects, but an electronic sound construction that I am still rather proud of.
