The repeat performance of my major work from last year, lucidity. This work took around eight months to write and research, drawing upon spectral, glitch, minimalist and electroacoustic influences. Performed at the best venue in Perth, The Bakery, with an amazing and furious jazz trio, The Thing! (Sweden/Norway).

From what I can tell, these guys play music that is really explosive, impulsive, loud and clever. Mats Gustafsson is such a highly rated performer, any of the videos or audio examples on the website will attest to his ability. Really excited to see these guys play live.

Tomorrow evening (Thursday 02/12/2010) the 2nd Warp Chamber takes place. The live performers Brules Rules, Solar Barge, Salamander and Obscotch are seriously some of the best experimental/electronic acts in Perth at the moment. Also included in the package are live visuals and octophonic surround sound. I’ll be using a custom built maxMSP surround sound patch to spatialise the live performers. WARP CHAMBER is an ever-changing and fully integrated audiovisual performance space for experimenting musicians. In this edition of Warp Chamber, several speakers will form an enclosing ring around the audience (specially engineered by sound artist Kynan Tan), creating an interior chamber of sheer sonic immersion. In addition to this, three projection screens will be set up which will broadcast live and pre-recorded visual material devised especially by each act.

BRULES RULES is Steven Aaron Hughes (Injured Ninja) and Carl Properjohn (French Rockets) combining forces to create a monolithic wall of rhythmically overdriven sonic energy, pooled in a trance-inducing stroboscopic field of lasers and lights, for your health. (www.soundcloud.com/brulesrules)

SOLAR BARGE was conceived in 2009 as a musical representation of the mythic journey of the Egyptian sun god Ra and his crew aboard their celestial boat. Each Solar Barge performance or recording is a unique permutation of this concept, embellished and reimagined through improvisation and fluctuating arrangements. Musically, the project evokes epic krautrock jams, interspersed with abrasive noise interludes, guitar-loop ambience and minimal polyrhythmic grooves. SALAMANDER is two brothers, Alex and Chris Last, fusing laptop synthesizers, midi-controllers, digitally-imported ruined pianos, field recordings, fx pedals, tectonic bass, sample pads and other bizarre creations with live hallucinatory visuals, breeding a mixture of organic and utterly inorganic sounds to create a viral mesh of evolutionary deranged creatures and environments, evoking realms of altered consciousness, intraterrestrial unknowns and transmuted cosmic radiation. OBSCOTCH is the moniker of underground experimental musician Jake Moore. Abandoning the ambient electronica of his previous incarnation Orions Belt, Obscotch began as an experimenal noise project, tackling a plethora of styles and influences that would ultimately culminate in the 2005 release Counter Consumate. Post-2005 Obscotch has been creating increasingly complex and meticulously programmed electronic music that has drawn comparisons to Autechre, Upland and Ricardo Villalobos. This year I have been studying to achieve Honours for my Bachelor of Music: Music Technology. I have spent around the last 8 months researching, programming and writing music for large scale electroacoustic ensemble. I decided to base the project around the music of Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto, in particular their work utp_ in collaboration with Ensemble Modern. The aim of this project is to find ways to synthetically combine the elements of acoustic and electronic music in a way which enhances both and thoroughly explores dense, engaging textures.

‘lucidity’  is 46 minutes of music for large ensemble, electronics and video projections.

Performers:

Some of the keys to this work are its use of pre-recorded, real-time and manipulated sound synthesis and sampling; scoring for acoustic instruments and electronics using similar techniques and methods; spreading textures across the entirety of the frequency spectrum and combining elements of instituational electroacoustic music, modern electronica / microsound and modern experimental band formats (jazz and post-rock).

CHROMA is the second concert curated by composers collective Granular Synthesis. The theme for the night is AUDIO/VISUAL. Expect to see conspiracy films, abstract imagery and video art combined with electro-acoustic explorations, skittering free improv and laptop cacophony. Granular Synthesis goes multi-disciplinary with spoken text and absurdist theatre pieces where the musicians’ acting abilities are put to the test. The result: definitely challenging and always entertaining.

Granular Synthesis first demonstrated a knack for combining unusual and individual musical elements in their concert ‘Libertas’. The composers explored solo and ensemble improvisation in a semi-structured concert environment.

The collective formed to try and push the boundaries of group composition and help develop each others’ artistic practice through concerts, workshops and commissions. Core members include WAAPA and UWA composition graduates Ben Hamblin, Tiffany Ha, Tim Beahan, Kelly Curran and Kynan Tan who have all been active in bands, concerts and sound installations in recent years.

For CHROMA, Granular Synthesis welcome contributions from other Perth musicians; including works by Brett Murray, Obscotch, David Boring, The Boost Hero Man and Sam Gillies; and performances by Jess Currie and Liz Lofthouse.

Yet again the year reaches that time where the local and independent radio needs our help. But to get this help they put on some pretty fantastic shows and with Adam Trainer at the music director helm now, there’s a new dash of experimental concoctions being added to the party vibe.

Chilling in the upstairs cinema is Craig McElhinney, Gilbert Fawn, Mystic Eyes and Rabbit Island, and I will be handling the live visuals. The screen and projections up there look AMAZING so this is definitely one to catch, if you are into hypnotic abstract and mystifying visuals to accompany your favourite live experimental artists. That’s not to mention the many, many other fun bands, DJs and presenters that will be inhabiting the cinema, and it’s all for the best cause. Keep the local and experimental radio kicking.

This week part of the show will be dedicated to a special feature on Spectral Music.

I will be performing on Wednesday the 26/05/2010 at the Fremantle Arts Centre with local cello legend Tristen Parr for the opening of a new exhibition by French artist Pierre Bismuth, co-writer of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!

I am a huge fan of this film and this style of art, Bismuth is bringing some exhibitions and installations that have been created with Michel Gondry of which I am personally a bit too excited about.

Tristen and I recently did an extended cello set at the Granular Synthesis concert Libertas and we will be bringing that plus lots more for this very special occassion.

Pierre Bismuth has been exhibiting his work for the past twenty years. Prominent monographic exhibitions have been held at the British Film Institute, the Kunsthalle in Basel, Nice’s Villa Arson, Rotterdam’s Witte de With, at MAMCO in Geneva, and at the Kunsthalle in Vienna. He has participated in group exhibitions at the Centre Georges Pompidou, the ICA in London, the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, Frankfurt’s Museum für Moderne Kunst, the Kunsthalle Bern; the Ludwig Museum in Köln, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and numerous others. His work was included in the 2001 Venice Biennale and in Manifesta 4. Bismuth has had solo shows at galleries in such cities as London, Paris, Brussels, Turin, Tel Aviv and Antwerp. Pierre Bismuth is the only visual artist to have ever won an Academy Award — in 2005 for Best Original Screenplay with Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman for the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

This coming Tuesday the 19/05, I will be performing alongside Tom Hall (QLD), Chris De Groot and Stina, as part of the Sound Unbound Festival at ECU. The event will be held in the Kurongkurl Katitjin gallery on the ECU Mt Lawley Campus, which is a really cool gallery space being used for sound experiments for this fortnight.

Should be a fantastic concert all around, Tom Hall does some great things with digital sound and has recently released some music on the Overlap.org San Franciscan music community.

I will be doing live vocal / guitar / maxMsp performance, bringing the set I played on my Japan tour back to Perth. I’ll also be lending some digital processing to Chris De Groot’s Novelty Instrument set.

I am a part of a new composers collective called granular synthesis and we are putting on our first show at Callaway Auditorium on Wednesday the 28th of April. After this show we are really interested in building the collective and expanding the horizons – allowing other composers to have works played in professional concerts. My works in this mostly involve max/MSP synthesiser improvisation, and max based triggers of audio sampling.

about libertas:

Libertas is the first show organised by new composers collective Granular Synthesis and features a focus on improvisation and spur of the moment creations. For the inaugural show the group decided to compose a program of all new works that crosses the boundaries of electronic music, classical composition and modern rock experimentalism.

Works displayed in this concert include the Agoraphobia set in which each composer has contributed a section, audio/visual live scoring and multiple pieces for instruments manipulated by electronics. This concert features only works of short duration in an attempt to cover as much ground as possible and to smoothly combine an eclectic multitude of music and sound art.

Libertas is a concert that focuses on the nexus between composition and improvisation. Each member of Granular Synthesis has approached this concept in a creative and unique way, bringing you an exciting program of works that vary from structured compositions, electro-acoustic experimentation and band based improvisation.
